うる星やつら episode 34 (2002)
Urusei Yatsura 34 (2022) review
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
The principal visits Onsen-sensei’s class as the students bicker with their teacher. Later, the students clean in the principal’s office. The principal is unconscious with a knock on his forehead. Onsen-sensei grills the students and comes up with theories to implicate each of them. Ryuunosuke, Ataru, and Shuutarou turn tables on Onsen-sensei and interrogate him as Sakura-sensei observes. The principal wakes up and reveals he knocked himself out trying to crack a boiled egg.
Lum visits Ran, who’s growing an alien plant that can repeat gossip it hears. Ran and Lum both yell bad things about each other, then cover the plant when they realize the harm it could do. Cherry releases the plant, causing it to spread its flowers all over town and take root. The different flowers have different fragments, making people think the worst, like Shuutarou wets his bed.
The battered Onsen-sensei visits the Moriboshi home, but it too weak to be heard.
Thoughts/Review:
The drek that comprised Urusei Yatsura 34 came from source manga chapters 311, 233, and the last segment from chapter 331. The first story apparently never received an OG anime adaptation, even though I thought I remembered it. The second story’s OG adaptation was episode 135. And of course, OG episode 189 covered the Onsen-sensei visit, which originally came from chapter 298.
Boring Rubbish
The first story of Urusei Yatsura 34 is just some poor parody of a “who done it” murder mystery. It was beyond stupid and not funny in the least. I felt myself losing IQ points as I watched it. I’m starting to remember how much of the OG anime bored the crap out of me ’cause the underlying source stories were drek.
Likewise, the second story of the episode was rubbish. Again, it wasn’t funny. However these flowers regurgitating bits of what Lum and Ran screamed is supposed to make me laugh. Its just more stupidity. I found it to be more of a mixed bag in the OG adaptation. But that wasn’t the case here.
Finally, we again have the continuation (and hopefully completion) of Onsen-sensei’s home visits. Guess who didn’t laugh?
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
In the end, Urusei Yatsura 34 is full of tedious, boring rubbish with trash subtitles.
Even with my sometimes-quasi-legendary stubbornness, I’m still not sure how I made it through all the episodes of UY years ago (from our local video store that’s still around and could double as a museum: Scarecrow Video). Seriously, my best guess is latent masochism surfacing during a dark period.
But I really doubt I could do it again, let alone blog them all without an occasional terse review of “Yawn.” or “WTF?” slipping through. My hat is off to your dedication. (^_^)º
Haha! The modern adaptation is WAY better than the OG one when it comes to the tedious stories. Ten-chan, Fujinami, and Cherry used to drive me bonkers in the OG anime. However, they are only used sparingly in the new adaptation. That helps a ton.
Which reminds me, I think there’s another episode out. But I did a manga review instead (going up on Wednesday) for a long out of print, short manga adaptation of a light novel.
Ugh. I was just remembering the general drekitude, and had blissfully forgotten those specifics. *wince* (>_<)
Ten-chan and Cherry had slipped my mind until you mentioned them… but Fujinami was so bad, I had to look him up because my brain had fully blocked him out. If the new series has an episode where Ryuunosuke murders her father by using him as a baseball bat to knock the flying Ten-Chan two feet up Cherry's "pit", I might watch it. (Sorry, I /really/ couldn’t stand them.) (^_~)
Long shot — the review isn't for Crest of the Stars, is it?
That’s a title I’m aware of, but that’s about it. I should watch the anime adaptation someday.
Fair warning, it starts off with a full three episodes of scene-setting and often has pacing problems by comparison with today’s anime. But the series (CotS, Banner of the Stars 1 and 2, then the BotS OVA) is one of my favorites, and I hope you’ll enjoy it if/when someday arrives.
It also features a very young-sounding KAWASUMI Ayako aka Saber as the female MC (in a duo, but definitely not just a love interest). Which is fitting since they’re kids who grew up in an uneasy peace, having to find their roles in a war.
Well, Saber’s seiyuu is certainly cause to bump BotS up the list. 😂
Sorry, I can’t resist trying to toss in a little more temptation… if you go to ww4 , gogoanime2 , org and search for Crest of the Stars, scroll down and choose EP 3, then jump to 19:00, you get a good taste of what she sounded like as Lafiel.
And one of the better cute/weird/funny moments of all the scene-setting, if you watch for a few minutes.
Context: Up to then they’ve been talking about how Lafiel wanted to know if she was a “daughter of love”, and how the Abh (Lafiel’s race, who were genetically engineered by humans to go out and explore space for them) do their own sometimes-offbeat genetic manipulation when they have kids.
